We did it!

Dear Colleagues,

We're happy to announce that after almost 10 months of difficult negotiations, we have reached an agreement on our first union contract for OHSU house officers!

We made major gains in almost all of the categories we identified as a priority for a first contract: four weeks of vacation paid licensure and step III fees, and the introduction of a housing stipend for everyone and relocation stipend for future interns.

We still have a few final details to work out before we can hold a vote to ratify our first contract (likely in mid-January), but here is the financial package we have tentatively agreed to:

Strong Annual Salary Increases (using weighted average 2019-2020 salary of $64,036)

  • 2.0% ($320.18) 7/1/20 (.05% retro to July, in addition to the status quo increase of 1.5%)
  • 2.5% ($1,608.91) 7/1/21
  • 2.5% ($1,649.13) 7/1/22

Licensure and Equipment

  • Limited licensure for all years
  • $895 Step III fee
  • $500 Post-ratification one-time stipend for equipment (medical equipment, phone, laptop, etc.)

Housing stipend

  • $2,000 per academic year + 5% inflation (Total of $6,300 for length of 3-year contract)

 Relocation

  • $1,000 for PGY1s starting July 1, 2021

Education

  • $500 minimum for all residents in 2020, can be used for equipment as well as items listed in TA
  • $750 minimum for all residents in 2021, can be used for equipment as well as items listed in TA
  • $750 minimum for all residents in 2022, can be used for equipment as well as items listed in TA

Fourth week of vacation

Average total value to individual resident: $4750 per year/ $14,250 for 3 year contract

In addition, we were able to put other current benefits (retirement contribution, wellness benefits, moonlighting and other GME policies) into our legally binding contract.

We are grateful to all of you for your support of our efforts and for your hard work every day (and night) on behalf of our patients. We are proud of our work on this terrific first contract and we recommend a YES vote on our historic first contract for OHSU residents!

We will keep you posted on the next steps for ratifying our new contract.

In Solidarity,
