A Budget Is A Moral Document

Colleagues,

We hope you've been able to schedule your fourth week of vacation and that the academic year is off to a great start.

Bargaining continues: on July 16th, we proposed the remainder of our financial package to management, striving to bring OHSU up to par with other west coast institutions. Our proposals included a salary increase equivalent to the average of our West Coast peers, a housing stipend, a wellness stipend, and additional compensation for chief residents, in addition to our previous proposal that included educational funds, coverage of Step 3 fees and licensure, free parking, and increased meal money. See below for the benefits provided at comparable West Coast hospitals and a summary of our proposals.

We understand that we are negotiating our first union contract in the midst of great instability and uncertainty. Our health care system, our nation and the world will be forever changed by the events of 2020. So will we. But we will not stop coming together to improve the medical system and physician training. As our colleagues at Yale University state in their bill of rights, “We refuse to sacrifice as doctors what we are owed as human beings.”

As always, our contract negotiations are open to observers. Let us know if you'd like to attend--our next virtual bargaining session is July 30th from 5-8pm. If you'd like to become more involved in union operations and bargaining, we'd love to have you.

In Solidarity,

Doctors Anish Desai, Anushka Shenoy, Breanna Jedrzejewski, Heather Buxton, Lana Weber, Mary Storm, Silas Cardwell, Simone Dekker, and Xiao-Yue Han
